JEWISH HERITAGE TOUR: THE SEPHARDIC PAST OF THESSALONIKI
There aren’t many places that can claim to have the connection Thessaloniki has with Judaism. In this tour we are going to unravel and understand this connection.
WHY DO THE JEWISH HERITAGE TOUR
Thessaloniki was for hundreds of years a Jewish metropolis. Ever since 1492 Thessaloniki has been called “Jerusalem of the Balkans” and was, once upon a time, home to thousands of Sephardic Jews who made this city their home. Until the Nazi occupation of the 1940s, the jewish population of Thessaloniki was the most prominent in all aspects of life: from social to commercial. The jewish community of Thessaloniki would build dozens of synagogues, publish newspapers and dominate the markets of the city, leaving a mark in the topography of this place.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE JEWISH HERITAGE TOUR
In this Jewish Heritage Tour of the city we are going to visit and understand the Jewish past of Thessaloniki. From the Synagogue to the Jewish museum and from the Holocaust Memorial to the old jewish neighbourhoods, we are going to unravel the jewish history of “La Madre de Israel”.
